Salem, Massachusetts

We slept in this morning because the drive from Kenneybunkport to Salem was only about an hour and a half. Turns out we could have spent more time in Maine, because there really isn't all that much to do here in Salem.

The first thing we did was the Witch Museum. Really, it wasn't a museum at all. They took us in this big room where they had life size diorama's of the Salem witch trials with voice overs. Then they took us to another exhibit that supposedly explained the progression of how we have come to perceive witches. According to this place the first witches were Pagan midwives and the current image of a witch being something evil was created by people who feared the midwives power and sought to tarnish their image. The last exhibit was of a Wiccan couple explaining their neo-pagan, earth-centered religion. The voice over Wiccan people explained that they were recognized as a valid religion in 1982 and not to "fear" them. Yeah. The guide said that there are about 1500 Wiccan people who live in Salem, but on Halloween there are about 30,000. So, long story short, I do not recommend this "museum" should you ever find yourself in Salem, Mass. Of course, if you don't do it, then I don't know what you'll do.
We heard about the Salem waterfront amusement park...turned out to be about six ancient arcades and ice cream shops....
So, we gave up. Went to dinner and then took the kids to see Kung Fu Panda...
On the walk to the theater we walked thru this old, old cemetery. Oh, you know how I love cemeteries! Some of these headstones were dated in the late 1600's. The above one was a family that lost three children all at 16 months of age. Probably all due to something that is easily diagnosed and curable these days.
Before the movie started we got more Ben and Jerry's ice cream, and on the way passed Lyceum Hall where it turns out that Alexander Graham Bell placed the first public phone call.

So, tomorrow we are leaving to drive 15 miles into Boston. I can't wait...the Old North Church,
Boston Harbor, the Old State House, the site of the Boston Massacre, Kings Chapel Burying ground...Fenway Park!

Blessings,
Leslie

I just heard you are going to the parade for the Celtics. I bet that will be lots of fun. Also, a baseball game at Fenway Park. It is the oldest in the country I think. Michele is sitting here with me. She is finally out of the hospital. What a klutz. Can't wait to hear about the parade and the ballgame.
