Day 29: Colorado Springs

Greetings from Colorado Springs!  It was a pretty short drive this morning from Vail.  We went to Garden of the Gods on our way into town.  Very pretty.

It reminded me of the Arches National Park in Utah.  It was privately owned  by a railroad tycoon and upon his death at his request his children donated the land to the city of Colorado Springs with the stipulation that it always be free for people to visit.

At the visitor center Kendall made friends with a service dog whose owner let her feed him ice cream!

After Garden of the Gods we raced over to see the Air Force Academy before it closed for the day.  Wow!!!  Its so pretty!  And huge!  It sits on a ton of land at the base of the mountains.

It is the polar opposite of West Point.  Old vs. New...in history, technology, buildings.  And, everything is blue!  Even the hand dryers in the bathrooms! The building designs are all airplane inspired especially the chapel...

We didn't get to go in because they were getting ready for a wedding.  So cool!  The groomsmen were dressed in their formal blues.

The dorm here is a quarter mile long! The mess hall holds 4,600 people and they can feed them all in 25 minutes.  The cadets eat family style.

The whole look is "fitting" for the air force. It's sleek and modern looking with low buildings that allow you to see the big blue Colorado sky. Breathtaking.  We loved it!

We checked in the hotel, went swimming and watched the Blind Side.  We are in the home stretch.  After tonight we have only one my night before we can sleep in our own beds!!

Tomorrow is a long drive to Oklahoma City, so we will be hitting the road early!

Blessings,
Leslie
