We started the day in Atlanta, with the World of Coca-Cola. Then, we TRIED to see the Ebenezer Baptist Church and Dr. King's gravesite. However, we didn't even get out of the car there, because there is absolutely no place to park. Anywhere. The only available parking is on the street. There is this big beautiful new church, the Dr. Martin Luther King Center for Non-Violent Social Change, and his gravesite and no place for vistors to park. Besides that driving through the neighborhood is like being in a time warp. I wondered if Dr. King were to visit there today, would he really see any change, or feel that he'd made a difference in the civil rights stuggle in our nation. The whole thing was disgraceful and the city of Atlanta ought to be ashamed. Sorry to vent my frustration, but the history teacher in me was disgusted.
We arrived in Charleston about 5:30 and after checking into the hotel, we wandered around for awhile. We ate at a fantastic restaurant, where I had one of the best meals ever. Mandy crashed hard when we got back to the hotel.
Thomas and Grace's Top Five for June 3, 2006:
1. "Going to the Coke Factory!"
2. "We mixed all the cokes together. Grace didn't like it, but Thomas did."
3. "Mom didn't like the China Coke and made a nasty face."
4. " We liked throwing pennies in the pineapple fountain."
5. " This is the best hotel ever, 'cuz our room has stairs." (We've traveled over 1000 miles and THIS is what impresses them?!)
We are looking around Charleston some more in the morning, and then we are headed to Myrtle Beach.
