Day Seven: Cape May to NYC!!

Wow...where to begin! We had breakfast in a great little pancake house in Cape May called Uncle Bill's and then hit the road to the Big Apple. We drove through Atlantic City, but didn't get out because it was raining and nasty. We also took a small detour to Bargaintown, NJ to find the house Scott lived in from kindergarten to second grade....more about that later. We got to the New York area around 3:00 but didn't get to our hotel until about ten after 5:00! The traffic was awful, one wrong turn takes an hour to correct, but we won't go into that here! Once we got through the Lincoln Tunnel and into Manhatten it was complete gridlock. To help the kids pass the time and look around, we suggested that Thomas practice his reading and read the signs of the stores we were passing/parked near. All of a sudden we hear,"Playpen?, Peepshow?" Scott and I were trying desperately not to let him see us cracking up. I guess we learned a good lesson about being aware of your surroundings before suggesting that your 6 year old read the signs! And of course, Scott felt the need to commemorate the event with a picture:

Thomas and Grace's Top Ten for July 7, 2006:

1. "Seeing the house where dad used to live." Since we were so close, Scott wanted to drive by the house where he lived from the time he was three until he was 8. After driving around lost, a couple of phone calls to his mom and dad and thanks to mapquest, we finally found it! The reason they said they liked this, was because Scott showed them the curb where he and his friend sat Aunt Robyn in an ant pile and cut all her hair off!

2. "Eating the best pizza in the world." It's true, New York pizza is the best in the world!

3. "We went to the biggest Toys'R' Us ever and got "Floam", and new games for our Leapster and Vsmile." We took them to the Toys 'R'Us in Times Square. It's HUGE!! And, who can go in the biggest toy store ever and not get toys??!! By the way, "Floam" is this disgustingly slimy cross between playdoh and slime with bits of styrofoam thrown in. I don't recommend it.

4. "Riding the ferris wheel." Toys'R'Us is so big they have a ferris wheel inside the store!

5. "Splashing in the puddles!" It's a steady miserable, cold rain here in NYC this evening. We even bought one of those clear plastic rain guards that go around the stroller because Mandy was getting soaked. She looks like the bubble boy in it! I had packed jeans for myself and the kids, but Scott only brought shorts, he's about to freeze! I thought the kids would be complaining about having to walk in the rain, but they didn't mind a bit, in fact stomping in every big puddle they passed has even made today's top five!

Tomorrow we are hoping, weather permitting, to see the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and the American Girl store. Pray for nice weather!

Blessings,

Leslie

Should read: "Day Seven: Made it through 6-6-06". I was pleasantly surprised to make it through the day and avoid any encounters with the four horsemen (or any other apocalyptic harbingers for that matter).

PS: So Con the Man of Dark?
