Ok...I am really lovin' South Carolina! Not only is it breathtakingly beautiful with all the huge magnolia trees, pine trees and the kudzu draping over all of it like a blanket, and of course there's the rich history, and the unbeliveable colonial/plantation homes, but the people here are so incredibly nice and helpful. They are also very proud of their state and their history....and here I thought we Texans had cornered the market on state pride!
We spent the morning in Charleston ( I could have spent the rest of the trip there) and went through the market. We left around lunchtime and drove out to Myrtle Beach, about a 2-2 1/2 hour drive. This place is like something out of a movie. It's the classic east coast beach town. Boardwalk type atmosphere. Walk up ice cream, corn dog places, arcades--the ones with the fortune teller and skeeball not the new electronic stuff.
We did head back to the hotel around dusk though, we were getting the vibe that the nightlife here isn't kid friendly! Example: "Mommy that guy has my name tattooed on his back!" Shirtless guy with at giant cross in the center of his back and "Amazing Grace" under it! Also, the guy selling tickest to the haunted house had creepy snake eye contacts and his lower lip pierced. Scott, ever the bold photographer, took the kids pictures with the creepy guy.
Thomas and Grace's Top Five for June 4, 2006:
1. "Thomas got a new red knife." Thomas got a pocketknife at the outdoor marketplace in Charleston. He's super proud of it.
2. "Playing at the beach."
3. "Taking a fancy picture." They had one of those old west photo places here, so we decided to have our portrait done. It turned out very cute. Grace and I are in saloon wear and Thomas and Scott are gunslingers and Mandy looks adorable in her vintage baby dress and bonnett. Grace thought the whole thing was fabulous because she got to wear an off the shoulder dress, pearls, feather boa and hold a fan!
4. "Playing games on the boardwalk."
5. "Riding on that ride that went around in a circle." For whatever reason they found this thing to be hysterically funny. They all three rode it. Grace three times.
For whatever reason, I'm having trouble posting pictures. I'll try in a separate post. We are headed to Virginia Beach/Norfolk area today.
